1990 Annual Report of Vital Statistics Department of Health, City of New Haven

Infant Deaths

According to state data there were a total of 27 resident infant deaths recorded in 1990. The infant death rate decreased drastically from 18.5 per 1,000 live births in 1989 to 10.9 per 1,000 live births in 1990. A total of 15 infant deaths occurred in the neonatal period (first 28 days of life) accounting for 55% of all infant deaths in 1990. Twelve infant deaths occurred at an age period greater than 28 days (postneonatal). *

Of all infants who had birth data available (23), 8 weighed less than 2,500 grams. Twenty-nine percent of the infant deaths had extreme immaturity, or other causes related to low birthweight listed as either the primary cause of death or as an underlying cause of death.

The average age of the mother of infants who died in 1990 was 28 years. Teen-age mothers gave birth to 5 of the infants who died in 1990. The infant death rate for infants born to teen-age mothers was 1.3 per 100 live births.

More male infants died in 1990 than female infants. A total of 18 males died making the male infant death rate 13.7 per 1,000 births. Female infants had an infant death rate of 7.8 per 1,000 live births, a total of 9 female infants died in 1990.

In the gestational age category 4 infant deaths were reported as "unknown" or "99". From this account, 4 deaths to babies born prematurely (<37 weeks) were reported.

* These statistics were derived from birth certificate and death certificate data given to the New Haven Health Department by the State of Connecticut. Unfortunately, the data for infant deaths didn't always match the data for births.
