Period of Gestation

There were a total of 163 premature births recorded in 1990. This total accounted for 6.6% of all births in 1990, a slight decrease from the 1989 ratio of 7.4%. the rate of premature births has continued to decrease from 1988.

In 1989, the premature birth rate was 74.0 per 1,000, the 1990 premature births per 1,000 live births was 66.1. From 1988 until 1990 the number of premature births had consistently decreased.

The premature birth rate for nonwhite mothers was almost twice as high as for white mothers in 1990. The rate for white mothers was 45.1 premature births per 1,000 white births and 83.9 per 1,000 births for nonwhite mothers. Table 6 below shows the premature births by age and race of the mother for 1988-1990.
