Summary of New Haven Birth Data: 1990

There were a total of 2,465 live births to New Haven residents in 1990. The 1990 birth rate of 18.9 per 1,000 showed a slight decrease over 1989 birth rate of 20.1 per 1,000. The fertility rate (based on women aged 15-44 years old) showed a decrease of 10% from the previous year. The median weight at birth increased slightly in 1990. The sex ratio (males to 1,000 females) increased from 1,109 in 1989 to 1,132 in 1990. The teen-age mother rate continued to decrease again in 1990 to 158.6 per 1,000 births. The premature birth rate decreased sharply as well as the immature birth rate but the illegitimacy rate increased slightly. All of these rates are summarized below in Table 1, and are shown in more detail in the section on births to follow.
