1989 Annual Report of Vital Statistics Department of Health, City of New Haven

Infant Deaths

According to state data there were a total of 47 resident infant deaths (<1 year) recorded in 1989. The infant death rate increased from 16.3 per 1,000 live births in 1988 to 18.5 per 1,000 live births in 1989. A total of 31 infant deaths occurred in the neonatal period (first 28 days of life) accounting for 66% of all infant deaths in 1989. Sixteen infant deaths occurred at an age period greater than 28 days (post-neonatal). *

Of all infant deaths who had birth data was available (34), 15 weighed less than 2,500 grams. Forty-four percent of the infant deaths had extreme immaturity, or other causes related to low birth weight listed as either the primary cause of death or as an underlying cause of death.

Teen-age mothers gave birth to 7 of the infants who died in 1989. The infant death rate for teen-age mothers was not calculated because of the 47 infant deaths reported, 13 mothers were categorized as an unknown age.

More male infants died in 1989 than female infants. A total of 32 males died making the male infant death rate 12.6 per 1,000 live births. Female infants had an infant death rate of 5.9 per 1,000 births, a total of 15 female infants died in 1989.

In the gestational age category 11 infant deaths were reported as "unknown" or "99." From this account, 11 deaths to babies born prematurely (<37 weeks) were reported.

* These statistics were derived from birth certificate and death certificate data given to the New Haven Health Dept. by the State of Connecticut. Unfortunately, the data for infant deaths did not always match up with the data for births.
