A total of 455 resident deaths were due to diseases of the heart in 1989. This total was a decrease of 30 residents over the 1988 total of 485. At least one death due to diseases of the heart occurred in all of the age catagories from "25 - 29 years" through "85 and over". The majority of deaths due to this cause were in the higher age brackets. Residents who died of heart diseases who were 65 years and older accounted for 77% of all deaths attributed to this cause.

The death rate for white residents decreased from 480.0/100,000 in 1988 to 435.4/100,000 in 1989. For nonwhite residents the death rate decreased from 228.1/100,000 in 1988 to 226.7/100,000 in 1989.
