Ranked as the eighth leading cause of death was chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases which accounted for a total of 33 resident deaths in 1989. This number increased from the 1988 total of 34 deaths, which occurred as a result of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The percentage of total deaths decreased slightly from 2.5% in 1988 to 2.4% in 1989. White residents accounted for 2.1% of deaths and had a crude death rate of 37.0/100,000. Nonwhite residents had considerably lower figures with a total of 4 nonwhite resident deaths and a death rate of 7.9/100,000.
