1989 Annual Report of Vital Statistics Department of Health, City of New Haven

Period of Gestation

There were a total of 188 premature births recorded in 1989. This total accounted for 7.4% of all births in 1989, a slight decrease from the 1988 ratio of 7.7%. The rate of 1989 premature births has shown little difference from 1988.

In 1988, the premature birth rate was 76.9 per 1,000, the 1989 premature births per 1,000 live births was 74.0. From 1985 until 1987 the rate of premature births had consistently decreased, but in 1988 the number of premature births increased sharply, then decreased slightly in 1989.

The premature birth rate for nonwhite mothers was twice as high as for white mothers in 1989. The rate for white mothers was 44.6 premature births per 1,000 white births and 97.2 per 1,000 births for nonwhite mothers. Table 6 below shows the premature births by age and race of the mother for 1987-1989.
