Michael Westerveld, Ph.D.
Neuropsychology

Dr. Westerveld is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Yale University School of Medicine. He holds joint appointments to the Department of Pediatrics and Child Study Center. Dr. Westerveld earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1988. He joined the Faculty in the section of Neurosurgery following completion of a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Yale.

Dr. Westerveld serves as the Director of Child Neuropsychology within the Department of Neurosurgery. Under Dr. Westerveld's supervision and direction, much needed neuropsychological services are available to children and adolescents with a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders through the development of interdepartmental cooperative efforts. Dr. Westerveld also coordinates the administration and delivery of clinical neuropsychology services to adult patients in the Epilepsy Program, and acutely ill patients on the trauma, neurology and neurosurgery wards in the hospital.

Dr. Westerveld's research is focused on the development of cognitive disorders in children and adolescents suffering from neurological injury, disease, or developmental delay. The prospective, interdisciplinary approach to the development of cognitive disorders is unique because of the variety and volume of children seen and treated at Yale. Dr. Westerveld is also a primary contributor to the largest multicenter investigation of neuropsychological issues in epilepsy surgery, bringing together neuropsychologists from 8 of the largest epilepsy surgery centers in the country. He is also the founder of a similar group dedicated to developmental issues in pediatric epilepsy.
