Neuropsychology

Mission

The Neuropsychology service is a division of the Department of Neurosurgery at Yale. The core function of the neuropsychology service is to provide neuropsychological evaluations to help referring physicians and patients better understand the manner in which their neurological condition is affecting their cognitive (thinking) and emotional functioning. This information can then be used to monitor changes associated with surgery, provide treatment recommendations, and assist with planning related to surgical interventions in an interdisciplinary setting. Therefore the primary mission of the service is to provide clinical care for patients within the neurosurgery service and those referred from area neurologists and other physicians. In addition to our core clinical mission, we are also dedicated to interdisciplinary scientific collaborations which provides innovative research investigating the neural substrates of complex cognitive abilities and mechanisms of plasticity and recovery in patients of all ages. Training of medical students, residents, and fellows in the techniques of clinical examination provides a foundation for the future. Central to the Neuropsychology mission is the philosophy that all patients, while similar in many respects, are nonetheless unique with respect to the organization of their cerebral functions and the range of their social and personal attributes.
