Other INP Events
The INP has many events throughout the year that draw large portions of the neuroscience community. These include:
INP Seminar Series:
Each month (usually the second Tuesday of the month at noon), the neuroscience program plays host to a distinguished extramural speaker. This seminar series is student-organized, with INP students suggesting, contacting, and hosting speakers themselves. Several students have the opportunity to enjoy lunch or dinner with each speaker at some of New Haven's finest dining establishments. The talks span all areas of neuroscience, reflecting the wide variety of interests of the students and faculty at Yale. Attendance is required for INP students but open to the entire neuroscience community. Seminars will be posted on this page, in the table above.
Student Research Talks (SRTs):
All INP students are expected to give an annual research-in-progress talk. These talks generally occur every other Tuesday during the academic year and are widely attended by the greater neuroscience community at Yale. Pizza lunch is provided. See the SRTs page for further details and a schedule of upcoming student speakers.
INP Journal Club:
Every other Thursday during the academic year, INP students meet to discuss a recent paper. The journal club is student-run; generally, for each meeting, one student is responsible for presenting the paper to the group, and another student arranges dinner. Yes, dinner is provided, courtesy of the INP and a local New Haven restaurant. See the Journal Club page for further details and/or to sign up to present.
Student-Faculty Lunches:
These provide an opportunity for students and faculty members to meet in a casual environment for question-and-answer sessions on topics like choosing postdoc positions, balancing research careers and family, etc. As the name would suggest, lunch is provided.
Annual Picnic:
Each September, the INP hosts a picnic for students and faculty to meet and relax together for an evening before getting swept up in the rush of the academic year. When the time is close, details on date, time, and location will be posted on this page.
Annual Retreat:
Most years, students and faculty also enjoy a weekend retreat held in the spring. Retreats are a combination of academics and socialization, with talks from faculty members, poster sessions from students, afternoon soccer games, evening mixers, and an always-hilarious program of skits courtesy of the first-year students. In many previous years, the retreat has been an off-campus event, but in 2008, it took the form of a one-day on-campus mini-conference called Neuro Day, with presentations from faculty, students, postdocs, and in general participation by all members of the Yale neuroscience community. Stay tuned for further details and for hopefully-soon-to-be-added YouTube videos of previous years' skits.
Happy Hours:
Occasional happy hours, usually on Fridays, allow the neuroscience community to interact in an informal setting. These are freqently attended by not only members of the Neuroscience Program, but by their labmates and members of all the departments affiliated with the INP, making them a great place to mix with member of the larger biological sciences community. (The INP students have also been known to venture out on Fridays even in the absence of an official program-sponsored happy hour.)
And much, much more!
A myriad of other events await those brave souls who join the email list of the INP registrar, Carol Russo (go here for her contact info). Also, email Carol if you know of an upcoming event that you would like circulated to the neuroscience community. Once she sends out the notice, the webmaster will also post each event in the table above.
