Applying to the INP

The INP and the BBS

Students seeking entry into the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program should apply through the Neuroscience track of Yale's Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) program. The BBS is an umbrella program which encompasses many other fields of study in the biological sciences in addition to neuroscience.

Students who are accepted into the BBS program in the Neuroscience track will first complete one year of course work and lab rotations as BBS students. At the end of the first year of study, students in all tracks of the BBS are required to select a dissertation adviser, at which point they cease to be in the BBS program and formally join a degree-granting program. Students who come into Yale via the Neuroscience track of the BBS will generally join either the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program (and will thus receive a Ph.D. in Neuroscience) or the Neurobiology department (and will thus receive a Ph.D. in Neurobiology).

Clearly, then, there are close associations among the BBS program, the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program, and the Neurobiology department, although all three are distinct entities. In all cases, however, applicants who wish to receive degrees in either Neuroscience or Neurobiology should begin by applying to the Neuroscience track of the BBS. Those with further questions are encouraged to contact the registrars and/or Directors of Graduate Studies for the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program and Neurobiology department, or the coordinators of the BBS program.
