Combined MD/PhD programs
exist at medical institutions across the USA and in
Canada. A select number of US institutions are
awarded federal funding to support their programs under
the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) grant.
This funding is awarded by the National
Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), a
component of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH). "NIGMS supports
basic biomedical research that is not targeted to specific
diseases, but that increases understanding of life processes
and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention." While some universities
sponsor MD/PhD students without NIH/NIGMS sponsorship,
the most well-recognized programs are MSTPs. Yale University
is one of over 30 institutions to receive this NIH support.
A complete
listing of MSTP institutions is maintained by NIGMS:

site contains updated information naming state-by-state
those institutions supported by MSTP funding, as well
as contact information for each school and direct links
