Network connections and wireless access points for laptops are available in the Medical Library. Wireless access is also available in most locations through the Medical Center campus and on Yale's central campus. All wired computers network adapters must be registered with ITS (Yale Information Technology Services) before they will work on the university network.  Some WiFi options require registration while others do not.

Wired Network Access

Wired Ethernet jacks are available in several locations within the Medical Library. Two carrels in the Morse Reading Room and three locations in the Information Room have live ethernet connections. They are easily identified by the Ethernet cables in these locations. Wired connections provide faster connectivity than wireless and users who want to transfer large amounts of data may notice better speed and performance on a wired connection.

Who is Eligible to Register a Device?

• Students may self-register their network devices on the Network Registration page. This may be optional for some WiFi connections but all devices using a wired connection MUST be registered.
  • Harkness Dorm residents should specify "Harkness" as their location when they register their WIRED ethernet connection
  • Students are encouraged to register all devices (wired, wireless, WiFi-enabled handheld mobile devices and game systems)
  
  Faculty and Staff (including Residents & Fellows) may use the wired jacks only if their laptop's ethernet port is registered for use on the Yale network. Wireless adapters can also be registered with ITS but this is not necessary in most cases.. Wireless Network Access

The Medical Library is among the locations on the Medical School Campus with access to Yale's wireless network. The network supports the 802.11a, b, g & n WiFi standards. Added security is enforced on the Medical Cener segment of the Yale University network. Users are therefore required to use one of the encrypted WiFi connections or a VPN connection in combination with the unsecured "yale wireless" network.. The best choice for Yale people is the YaleSecure Wifi network. YaleWPA and YaleWPA2 are also options for devices capable of making a WPA Enterprise connection.

• YaleSecure Network - This is the best choice for most users. This WiFi network does not require you to register your device with ITS but you must have a valid university NetID and a device capable of making a WPA enterprise connection. The first-time user may need to do some configuration and/or accept a certificate as part of the process of authenticating to the YaleSecure network. The specific process of connecting to the network will vary depending on the version of your operating and, for Windows users, whether you are using Windows or your wireless adapter's software interface to configure the WiFi connection.
• YaleWPA/YaleWPA2 Networks- This network requires you to register your device. As with YaleSecure, the method of connecting varies with the software that controls your WiFi adapter.
• Yale Wireless Network- This is an unsecured, unencrypted wireless network available on the Yale University. Because the Medical Campus network requires additional security, a VPN connection is required for full Internet access on the Medical Center segment of the university network. You should use YaleSecure or YaleWPA unless your device is incapable of connecting to WPA or WPA2.
• YaleGuest Network - The Yale University Guest Wireless Network provides a limited wireless data network for guests of the university. It allows access to a segregated portion of the unversity's wireless network and does not provide access to Yale University licensed content. YaleGuest is an insecure network (open and unencrypted) and should not be used by members of the University community.

Printing to the Library's Printers

You can print to designated Medical Library printers from your laptop (standard per page fee applies). You just need to be connected to the network, wired or wireless. Get the details on Printing in the Medical Library from your Laptop.

Wireless PDA/Mobile Devices

Mobile Devices with WiFi capability may be used on the Yale wireless network. As with laptop computers, the easiest and best way to connect is to use the YaleSecure network; 2nd choices are YaleWPA/YaleWPA2. Not all mobile devices (e.g. Palm TX) can connect to these secured networks so they will have to connect to the unsecured "yale wireless" network. These devices will then need to make a VPN connection for full Internet access..
