Elizabeth Seekye Bixler

1952-1957

Elizabeth Seelye Bixler serves on the Board of Directors of the National League for Nursing.

1956

Yale Corporation votes to close Masters of Nursing basic nursing program and substitute "a program consisting wholly of advanced education". Gives YSN degree granting authority for the MSN and for a Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery.

One-year Master of Science in Nursing program begins with three specializations: Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Maternal and Newborn Health Nursing including Nurse-Midwifery and Public Health Nursing.

Dean Bixler resigns effective 1959 with relief from responsibilities in 1958.

First MSN degrees awarded.

Florence Schorske (at left) named Acting Dean.

On leave of absence as Director, Division of Nursing, United States Public Health Service, Margaret Gene Arnstein is named the first Annie W. Goodrich Visiting Professor. Begins Faculty development in research methodology.

Associate Professor Ernestine Wiedenback authors textbook: "Family-Centered Maternity Nursing". 2nd. Edition published in 1967.


1959

Faculty plan for two-year curriculum that adds research about clinical practice to specialization is implemented.

Florence Schorske Wald named fourth Dean of the Yale University School of Nursing.

Effie Jane Taylor receives Adelaide Nutting Award, National League for Nursing, "for outstanding leadership and achievement in nursing".

Effie Jane Taylor receives Florence Nightingale Medal, highest International Red Cross honor "for distinguished and devoted service to the sick and wounded in time of war and peace and in disasters".
