Responsibilities for Teaching Assistant in the Science Education Outreach Program  

TFour TA positions are available in the spring semester.  Please contact Dr. Paula Kavathas if interested and also indicate interest on TA signup sheet in the summer.  TAs must sign up for the course entitled “Teaching in Science Education Outreach Program” (Gene 603 or IBIO603).  Responsibilities include:.

1. Attend the all-day session on “Teaching at Yale” given in the fall sponsored by the McDougal Center. Information on communicating with middle schools students in the urban setting will be available.

2. Students will spend 35-40 hours on SEOP activities concentrated within 3-4 weeks.

  • Meet with Dr. Kavathas to organize program.
  • Attend 1 hr. orientation session for new volunteers
  • Pick up flies/worms for Pproject I and make electrophoresis gels for Project III
  • Call volunteers for your session and remind them 1-2 days in advance. Arrange carpools. 
  • Teach in classroom. Thirty minutes before classes begin, setup materials at each station and discuss activities for each workstation with volunteers. Discuss how to effectively interact with the students.
  • Bring all supplies and equipment to school and return to Yale
  • Communcate with teacher to  make sure everything is running effectively

3. Serve as science fair judge in New Haven City Science Fair (2 days in March)  or participate in Communiversity Day on Old Campus (April).

4. TA will receive feedback on their teaching from the teacher at the school they are assigned.  They will also complete an evaluation form at the end and discuss their experience with Dr. Kavathas.
