Molecular
Genetic Pathology Fellowship
Overview.
Recently
the American Board of Pathology created a new subspecialty of "Molecular
Genetic Pathology". This is a joint effort of the ABP and the
American Board of Medical Genetics. Because of the newness of this
subspecialty, it is possible to obtain Board certification either
through experience through 2006 (for details, click
here) or by taking an ACGME-approved fellowship. Yale does not
currently offer an ACGME approved program but supports certification
by experience - indeed three individuals have been so certified over
the last three years and there a fellow is in training for 2004-05.
Training is a joint effort of the Departments of Laboratory Medicine,
Pathology and Genetics at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr.
Jeffrey Sklar is Director of the program, which includes for faculty
Drs. Brian
Smith, J
Greg Howe, Henry
Rinder, Pei
Hui, Jose
Costa, Michael
Hodsdon, Mazin
Qumsiyeh, and Allen
Bale. Fellows spend two years in training, one year doing predominantly
clinical work in all major subareas of molecular genetic pathology
(Mendelian disorders, immunology, neoplasia, hematology, infectious
diseases) and a second research year. Individuals previously certified
through their Yale experience now hold academic positions at Yale,
Harvard and the University of Bolognia. Candidates should have completed
their training in AP, CP, AP/CP or medical genetics (ABMG) at the
time of commencing the fellowship. Inquiries should be addressed to
Ms. Susan Durant, the Program
Coordinator.
