New
Haven is well-known for its long theater tradition. At one time, it
was the major site for the big production plays to premier before
going to Broadway; in recent years this tradition is being revived
and New Haven remains a major site for new drama. The city hosts five
major theaters. The Shubert and Palace theaters book mostly touring
Broadway musicals and similar shows. The Long Wharf theater is the
winner of several Tony awards and hosts predominantly new dramas which
may or may not go on to Broadway. The Yale Repertory Theater is affiliated
with the renowned Yale School of Drama. It is also a multiple Tony
winner and hosts a variety of serious dramas as well as works by up
and coming new playwrights. In addition, the School of Drama mounts
a number of student productions throughout the year which are low
cost or free. Within 15 miles of New Haven is the Oakdale in Wallingford,
CT, which is coming on as a strong regional competitor for touring
shows. There are also several other major theaters within about 30
miles of the city including the Goodspeed Opera House with another
long Tony-award winning pre-Broadway tradition and a beautiful location
on the hills overlooking the Connecticut River.
