OK,
if you want the NFL, NBA, American League, or NHL you have to go
to New York or Boston. However, if you want to enjoy some fun (and
very inexpensive) minor league baseball, the New Haven County Cutters
and several other AA clubs in the surrounding towns fill the bill
along with several minor league hockey teams. Women's basketball
has a strong tradition in Connectiicut arising from the legendary
UConn teams and the WNBA is represented by the Connecticut Sun.
The Connecticut Tennis Center is at Yale and hosts the annual Pilot
Pen International (formerly the Volvo International) in August right
before the US Open in New York - this tournament attracts the major
tennis "stars" each year. Olympic level ice skating can
be seen at the International Skating Center of Connecticut in Simsbury,
which is about an hour away. Of course, Yale games, played on the
extensive University athletic facilities, are also a frequently
enjoyed event.
The University has excellent athletic facilities including basketball,
squash and other facilities at Payne Whitney Gym and indoor ice
skating at Ingalls ring, horseback riding on the Armory field,
a Macdonald 18-hole golf course rated among the tops in the country,
the Yale Yacht club in nearby Branford, CT and an extensive outdoor
recreation center in East Lyme, CT (lake boating, fishing, swimming).
Long Island Sound provides excellent opportunities for sailing,
windsurfing and sea kayaking. There are extensive opportunities
for hiking including extensive pristine water company lands, biking,
canoeing, kayaking, and rock-climbing in the area as well. There
is juggling organized by the Yale Anti-Gravity Society, hang-gliding
over the Connecticut part of the Appalachian Trail, hot air Ballooning,
a very active aviation club, white water rafting trips, and local
skiing at Powder Ridge and at Mt. Southington.
