The department is involved in basic, translational and clinical research activities. Faculty research interests span a
broad range and include molecular virology and immunology, stem cell biology, cellular adhesion, the hemostasis-inflammation
interface, clinical pharmacology and toxicology, tropical medicine, microbial pathogenesis, molecular diagnostics,
structural biology, and biomedical engineering. In addition to the training of graduate and post-doctoral students in
individual laboratories, the Department carries out post-doctoral research training of MDs, MD/PhDs and PhDs under the
auspices of a special NIH sponsored program for "Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine" with participating
faculty from both Laboratory Medicine and a number of other basic science and bridge departments. We actively participate
in the Yale Investigative Medicine program which provides a means for MD-only nascent physician-scientists to obtain a PhD
degree while pursuing investigative work. The Department also houses the NIH-sponsored Yale Center of Excellence in
Molecular Hematology, the Frisbee Laboratory for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Research and Graft Engineering, and Core Laboratory
Facilities within the Yale Cancer Center (YCC) for Immune Monitoring and for Cellular Therapy. Facilities for specific
laboratory support of clinical research are also available.
To explore individual research programs, consult the web sites for individual faculty members which include details about their research programs. Alternatively, one may look through the list of faculty publications from the past academic years to get a flavor for investigative work in the Department.
