Cover: Three rows of normal outer hair cells are seen in a preparation from the cochlea of a normal, saline-injected, guinea pig (top). The outline of the cells and the W-shaped stereocilia are stained by rhodamine-phalloidin, a fluorescent indicator for actin. After treatment of animals with gentamicin (middle), almost complete loss of outer hair cells is evident. Animals receiving salicylate in addition to gentamicin show significant protection of hair cells (bottom). See article by Sha and Schacht.
