  Cover: Confocal micrograph of adenosine triphosphate-depleted Madin-Darby canine kidney cells exposed to flourescein-labeled dextran (MW 70,000) and propidium iodide (MW 668) in the incubation medium. Porous defects in plasma membranes allow entry into cells of only the smaller tracer, visualized as red signal, or both propidium iodide and the larger molecule flourescein dextran, shown in shades of orange, yellow, and yellowish green.
