Makerere University in Kampala
Uganda the “Pearl of Africa” is located in East Africa bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, and Tanzania. Although Uganda has gone through difficult periods during the past 20 years and a small area in north remains unsafe, Kampala is relatively safe and the people of Uganda exude friendliness and hospitality to foreigners.
Uganda's population is 27,269,482, with infant mortality of 67.83 deaths/1000 live births. Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Measles, Dysentery, Cholera, Neonatal tetanus, Plague, Polio and many other preventable and curable infectious diseases drop the life expectancy at birth to 51.59.
Makerere University is Uganda's premier institution of higher learning, with a student population of over 30,000. It ranks as one of the largest in East and Central Africa. The Faculty of Medicine is one of the oldest faculties of the Makerere University with long time history of productive collaborations with several European and North American Universities. It is located in Makerere Hill, one of the many hills on which Kampala, the capital city of Uganda is built. Kampala with a population of 2 million people, with an altitude of 1180m above sea level, has a pleasant weather, with annual temperatures averaging 17 degrees (minimum) and 21 degrees (maximum) Celsius.
Kampala is close to Lake Victoria and Jinja (origin of Nile River).
Mulago Hospital is an urban, tertiary care facility located in Kampala. It is the largest government referral hospital and the main teaching hospital of Makerere University. It has 1500 beds and staffed by very skillful faculty and house staff (Department of Medicine recruits 10 residents annually in a four-year program). Majority of patients admitted to Mulago Hospital have advance HIV with diverse clinical manifestations.
Mulago Hospital also has a Guest House for visiting faculty and trainees. It intended to house health volunteers at a subsidized rate, who come from overseas to do voluntary health work in the hospital. Each guest pays around 25 US dollars for bed and breakfast.
