Our fellowship training program is designed to prepare postdoctoral fellows for careers in academic investigative rheumatology in the outstanding educational environment offered by Yale University and the Yale School of Medicine. We offer a traditional fellowship for physicians that includes clinical training and two or more years of clinical or translational and laboratory research. We also offer research fellowships in immunology, inflammation and related disciplines for individuals with PhD degrees. Research training for both MD and PhD fellows is supported in part by a training grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Our program has a rich history in training leaders in clinical medicine and outstanding physician-scientists (in laboratory, translational and patient-focused research), many of who are now members of the Yale faculty or other academic departments. These former trainees include a university president, several division directors in the U.S., Canada and and two investigators of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Joe Craft, Chief of the Section, and Dr. Insoo Kang and Dr. Janine Evans, Program Directors, oversee the implementation of our training program. Drs. Linda Bockenstedt, Richard Bucala, Liana Fraenkel, Lisa Suter and Stephen Malawista, along with Drs. Craft, Kang and Evans mentor fellows in the clinical training program, along with 20 volunteer faculty members. Research training is mentored by individual faculty in rheumatology and/or the basic or clinical sciences at Yale under the leadership of Dr. Bucala and Dr. Fraenkel, who serve as research directors for the fellowship program in laboratory and patient-focused investigation, respectively.
Our program participates in the Rheumatology match for MD and MD/PhD trainees. Interested candidates can apply using the universal application available through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants with a PhD degree should contact Dr. Craft or any of the above-noted faculty in rheumatology.
