WHAT
IS SPRAY?
SPRAYis
the survey of Painters and Repairers of Autobodies by Yale. It is a large
survey of the automotive body shops in Connecticut. The purpose of this
survey is to investigate the workplace exposures associated with the automotive
industry. "Our goal is to study the health risks from exposure to chemicals
called isocyanates at autobody shops. We would also like to identify methods
to diagnose employees with respiratory problems such as asthma," states
the principle investigator, Mark R. Cullen, M.D.
SPRAY
was
launched to determine how isocyanates (especially hexamethylene diisocyanates,
HDI) found in autobody paints may cause or aggravate asthma and other respiratory
symptoms. Autobody shops have universal use of isocyanate-containing paints
and apparently high rates for asthma. Autobody shops will benefit from
the results of the SPRAY
survey.
SPRAY
is
funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a
division of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We are
looking for autobody shops willing to participate in SPRAY.We will work
together to reduce your exposure and improve health.
