As a clinician-educator, director of the Renal Fellowship Program in the Yale Section of Nephrology and member of the American Society of Nephrology Training Program Directors Executive Committee, one of my major objectives is to train and prepare fellows for a career in academic clinical nephrology. As such, the focus of education is in the areas of general consultative nephrology, intensive care nephrology (CVVHD) and chronic kidney disease and End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) care. Important to this educational process is the incorporation of scholarly activity and clinical investigation into the training program. As part of this process, fellows are instructed on the basics of epidemiology and statistics, educated in the process of authorship, and engaged in meaningful clinical research. My own interests in academic clinical nephrology include the etiology and treatment of dialysis-associated hypotension, surveillance of vascular access, renal complications of therapeutic agents, disorders of potassium homeostasis and HIV-associated renal disease. I serve as associate editor for the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Renal Pharmacology editor for Clinical Journal American Society of Nephrology and assistant editor for Seminars in Dialysis where I edit the educational series “Fellow's Forum in Dialysis”, which is a place where fellows can publish on ESRD topics under the guidance of a faculty mentor, and co-editor for “Images in Dialysis”. I also serve on the editorial board of the American Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Medical Sciences and Hospital Physician. At the hospital level, I serve as director of the Acute Dialysis program.
