Yale University is located in New Haven, Connecticut, a city of 160,000 on the Connecticut shoreline of Long Island Sound. New Haven is centrally located and easily accessible by auto or rail from Boston or New York City. New Haven's small size simplifies commuting and other activities of daily life. Despite its modest size, New Haven offers an unusually rich assortment of cultural assets. For example, theatergoers can choose among the Yale Repertory Theatre, which is the base for noted contemporary playwrights, the Schubert Theater where many Broadway productions premiered, and the Tony award-winning Long Wharf Theatre. The 100-year-old New Haven Symphony performs several classical series as well as popular Concerts on the Green. Noteworthy museums include the Yale University Art Gallery, Beinecke Rare Book Library and the Yale Center for British Art. For children, the dinosaur fossils at the Peabody Museum of Natural History and visits to nearby Mystic Aquarium and Seaport are especially popular.

Southern Connecticut provides true four-season recreation. In the summer, Long Island Sound provides exceptional opportunities for sailing and other watersports. Sailing lessons and rentals are available at the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club which is located nearby in Short Beach. Each August, New Haven is the site of the Volvo International Tennis Tournament. Golf enthusiasts are challenged by the Yale course or attend the Greater Hartford Open in nearby Cromwell. State beaches and parks provide ample opportunities for hiking, bicycling, swimming, and fishing. In the fall, popular weekend activities include antiquing, apple-picking, foliage tours, county fairs, and Yale football games. In winter, skiing and skating are available locally and within three hours drive at the famous Vermont resorts. In 1995, New Haven hosted the Special Olympics World Games, which was the world's largest single sporting event held that year.

There are many neighborhoods in New Haven and surrounding towns where pleasant and affordable housing can be found. Shopping is conveniently available both downtown as well as in the suburbs. Dining opportunities are varied and range from internationally famous pizza parlors to waterfront seafood houses and country inns. For accompanying persons, Yale Medical Partners provides support and information, and the Medical School operates an on-site day-care facility.
