The Section of Nephrology and Hypertension at Yale offers several options for clinical and research training in Nephrology. These include a: 1) two year clinical-track fellowship, 2) three or more year clinical+research track fellowship, and 3) a straight research fellowship for applicants who have already completed their clinical training in Nephrology.
Applications for the clinical only and clinical+research track positions are submitted using ERAS and filled via the Nephrology national match.
For applicants who want to be considered for the research only fellowship, please contact Dr. Lloyd Cantley directly.
Clinical Training. Both the clinical only and clinical+research track fellows undergo one full year of combined inpatient and outpatient Nephrology training. Clinical only fellows then undergo a second year that combines a further 6 months of inpatient training with a 6 month elective period for the performance of a research project. Fellows in the clinical+research track begin their research training in the second year while providing limited inpatient coverage and attending outpatient clinic 1/2 day/week.
Components of the clinical training include:
Core Clinical Curriculum. Nephrology Section Faculty provide a series of lectures designed to cover all aspects of clinical Nephrology practice. These are comprised of Monday afternoon lectures that focus on in depth understanding of renal replacement therapy and Friday Pathophysiology Lectures that encompass renal pathology; renal physiology; diseases of the glomerulus, tubules, and interstitium; renal transplantation; electrolyte disorders; and stone disease.
Research Training. Fellows in all three fellowship tracks will have the opportunity to perform research. In the clinical track, this occurs primarily during a 6 month block of protected time and is typically focused on clinically-based research. For the clinical+research track fellows, the research component of the training will begin in July of the second year and can be focused on either basic science or clinically-based research.
Components of the research training include:
