Sounds of Comfort

I was told since I would be awake
for the majority of my surgery
I should select the music
we will listen to

I think about
countrypolkabarbershoppers
for the humor of it all

But, it may not be smart
to irritate the surgeon, or make him laugh,
as he cuts through my brain

I choose my music for my comfort
As it is started, a resident asks
if this is considered music

The surgeon says it is Ladysmith,
he enjoys them
I feel the comfort. And the surgeon,
while humming, is about to begin

Neuro-logic

After I am home a week,
we go to the neurologist
with questions

I am told not to worry, I am fine
Glen wants only to know
what caused the seizure

He responds, “Well you know,
you are never the same
once the air
hits your brain.”

Laughing,
he turns his back
on me
