Our conference on April 8, 2002, focused on faith and the care of the patient.  Scientific medicine generally sees itself as grounded in experiment and reason and for that reason many physicians, and nurses as well, may be suspicious of attempts to call upon faith in an attempt to assist the healing process.  For many patients, though, faith informs the manner in which they understand their lives and respond to the experience of illness.

We are asked our speakers to consider ways in which faith may help sustain patients through illness and conversely whether faith, at times may be misleading, promoting ill-considered decisions by the patient.  Finally, for health care professionals, does a kind of faith underlie the ethos of patient care and if so, faith in what?
