The Program for Humanities in Medicine at the Yale University School of
Medicine was established in 1983 by Dr. Howard Spiro to affirm and
support the essential role of the arts and humanities in the medical
profession. A central component of the program has been an annual
lecture series (20-22 lectures) on the general theme of medicine and the
humanities. Later this year, a seminar series will be devoted to the
subject of the response and responsibilities of the medical profession to
the phenomenon of torture and warfare. An Arts Subcommittee of the Program
was established in 2001 by Dr. Thomas Duffy when he assumed directorship of the
Program of Humanities in Medicine. The subcommittee has joined with the Yale School
of Nursing in cooperative ventures in the arts and humanities. A film series in the Anlyan Center,
evenings in the local art galleries and a writing workshop mentored by the surgeon-novelist,
Dr. Richard Selzer, are all sponsored by the program. Susan Wheeler, the curator of the Fry
Print Collection at the Yale Medical Historical Library, is using
the rich resources of the Library collections in a series for students that makes available
for discussion the works of Andreas Vesalius, Thomas Willis, and William Hunter. This year there
will again be a drawing- photography-painting class offered by physician-artist,
Mark Depman, during the gross anatomy course. A literature-medicine seminar series meets
twice monthly under the leadership of psychiatrist, Paul Kirwin, for
reading and discussion of poetry. A prize for a juried creative writing contest is awarded
each year to a medical and nursing student.
The Arts Subcommittee has also been active in sponsoring exhibits on a regular basis at the Yale Medical Library where space is reserved for display of the student works. The Program will be sponsoring a sculpture and a portrait exhibits in the coming year.
