Clinical Interests

Dr. Villanueva has previously been in general ID practice in a Yale-affiliated community hospital and has experience and interests in both inpatient and outpatient infectious diseases. Her interests include: inpatient and outpatient HIV primary and specialty care; general inpatient and outpatient ID consultation; travel and tropical medicine. She is also interested in working with nursing staff regarding quality improvement projects in the area of infection control.

Research Interests

Dr. Villanueva is interested in creating processes that promote substantive collaborations with community agencies around HIV care delivery. This includes implementation of the Chronic Care Model for HIV care; she is interested in studying the impact of innovative models of clinical care delivery such as the Self Management Program which builds on a working partnership between patient and provider to improve patient and provider satisfaction while achieving improved health outcomes. She is interested in quality management and quality improvement programs to monitor and improve clinical performance in accord with national benchmarks. On a community level, she is the Program Director for the New Haven Ryan White Part A HIV Care Continuum which unites Yale-based and community AIDS-service organizations and provides an opportunity to study optimal models of community-wide HIV service delivery.

Educational Interests

Dr. Villanueva is involved in teaching activities at many levels, for medical students, residents, faculty and community attendings. As an experienced clinician and Donaldson Atkins Firm Chief, she is interested in teaching how to systematically think about clinical cases and initiate comprehensive management in an efficient, cost-effective, and patient-centered manner.
