Research Interests

Dr. Mark Siegel, the director of the Y-NHH MICU, is involved in multiple clinical research studies. For several years he has participated in multicenter clinical research trials investigating new treatments for sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), in addition to other facets of critical illness. He participated in all phases of the development of Drotrecogin alpha (activated), now marketed as Xigris, which has been shown to significantly decrease mortality among patients with severe sepsis. Dr. Siegel has several ongoing research projects conducted with Yale medical students, housestaff, and fellows, in areas such as the management of sepsis, end-of-life decision making, and psychiatric disorders in the next-of-kin of ICU patients. His major focus currently is a translational project examining the pathogenesis of sepsis and ARDS, conducted in conjunction with Drs. Elias and Siner.
