Yale Diabetes Center
The Yale Diabetes Center (YDC) is a clinical consultative service of the Section of Endocrinology at Yale University. Founded in 1994, the Center is a regional resource for diabetes care and education and represents the joint efforts of the Yale Schools of Medicine and Nursing, and Yale-New Haven Hospital, one of the nation's leading healthcare centers.
The YDC cares for over 1500 patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. We stress tight glucose control and aggressive management of other cardiovascular risk factors, in order to prevent or forestall the long-term complications of diabetes.
Our professional staff includes Drs. Rosa Hendler, Kevan Herold, Elizabeth Holt, Silvio Inzucchi, Robert Sherwin, Gerald Shulman & Terry Taylor, all board-certified or board-eligible
diabetologists/endocrinologists. Other staff members include
outpatient and inpatient diabetes nurse practitioners Geri Spollett,
Gael Ulisse, and Helen Psarakis, and clinical fellows from the
Section of Endocrinology. We also have access to the comprehensive
nutritional services of the Centers for Nutrition at Yale-New Haven
Hospital.
The YDC maintains close working relationships with other departments at Yale
University providing care to diabetes patients. These include Ophthalmology, Cardiovascular
Medicine, Nephrology, Vascular
Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Transplant
Surgery, Podiatry, Orthopedics, Obstetrics & Gynecology,
and Neurology.
Our services include patient education classes, which are held at Yale-New Haven
Hospital. We provide a full
range of diabetes care, including insulin pump therapy, one-on-one educational
sessions, glucose monitoring instruction, and insulin injection training. Care
is provided in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
The Yale Inpatient Diabetes Management Team is focused on improving the blood
glucose control of patients with diabetes. Team members consist of Gael Ulisse,
APRN, Helen Psarakis, APRN and Clinical Diabetes Nurse Specialist, the Endocrine
fellow, and diabetes attending. Rounds are conducted daily. Yale is a national
leader in the development of protocols and procedures to ensure optimal glucose
control during hospitalizations.
Clinical research opportunities are also available for our patients, who
may take advantage of ongoing clinical trials at the Yale General Clinical
Research Center.
Our popular pocket-sized booklet, "The
Yale Diabetes Center's Diabetes Facts & Guidelines" is
now in it's 8th edition, with annual distribution of more than 75,000 copies. Free
copies are available to all health care professionals. For your free
