Yale Pituitary Service

The Yale Section of Endocrinology is a recognized resource for the evaluation and management of patients with pituitary disease. Yale-New Haven Hospital is a regional center for pituitary surgery. The faculty of Yale Univeristy School of Medicine has specific interest and expertise in treating a variety of neuroendocrine diseases, including hypopituitarism, pituitary tumors, Cushing’s disease, acromegaly, prolactinomas, and adult growth hormone deficiency syndrome. Related neuroendocrine diseases (carcinoid, islet cell neoplasms) and conditions involving the adrenal glands, such as adrenal tumors, Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, hyperaldosteronism, and pheochromocytoma are also diagnosed and managed. Evaluation and treatment for reproductive disorders, such as hypogonadism, amenorrhea, and hirsutism are also provided, in conjunction with Yale Reproductive Endocrinology.

Neuroendocrinologists include Drs. Elizabeth Holt, Silvio Inzucchi, and Terry Taylor. Patients are co-managed with our colleagues in the Department of Neurosurgery (Drs. Alain deLotbiniere, Joseph Piepmeier, and Dennis Spencer), the Section of Surgical Endocrinology (Dr. Barbara Kinder, Sanziana Roman, Robert Udelsman), and the Departments of Therapeutic Radiology (Dr. Jonathan Knisely) and Diagnostic Imaging (CT, MRI, inferior petrosal sinus sampling), the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service, and the Section of Neuropathology.

Services for neuroendocrine patients include consultation, co-management with primary care physicians, second opinions, dynamic testing of all hypothalamic-pituitary axes, and pituitary hormone replacment therapy. Services available through our colleagues at Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital include dynamic pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), inferior petrosal sinus sampling, 3D conformal fractionated radiotherapy, and transphenoidal surgery. Gamma Knife radiosurgery is performed at the Yale-New Haven Gamma Knife Center.
