Housewives, Midwives, and Physicians: Early American Women in Medicine
American women have practiced medicine from the time of the first European
settlements in the seventeenth century to the present day. Dr. Rebecca Tannenbaum
will discuss these practitioners, beginning with the midwives and "doctoresses"
of the colonial period through the pioneering women physicians of the
nineteenth century.
Rebecca Tannenbaum, PhD, is a lecturer in the department of history at Yale
University. She received her PhD in history from Yale in 1997. Her recent
book, "The Healer's Calling: Women and Medicine in Early New England" tells the
intriguing story of the practice of household medicine in early America.
