The study of live vertebrate animals is an integral part of Yale University's research and teaching missions.

Yale falls under the authority of the Animal Welfare Act and receives Public Health Service (PHS) support for research and/or teaching involving live vertebrate animals. Therefore, the University must operate a program that includes a properly functioning Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC is guided by the U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research and Training.

The IACUC forms the foundation for effective self-regulation of animal care and use and is responsible for reviewing all protocols involving live vertebrate animals, ensuring compliance with federal regulations, inspecting animal facilities and laboratories and overseeing training and educational programs. The overall role of the IACUC is to ensure the humane and sensitive care and use of animals.

The IACUC also provides assistance to investigators in fulfilling their obligation to plan and conduct animal experiments in accord with the highest scientific, humane, and ethical principles.
