Compliance Handbook
ForewordFederal, state, and local laws and regulations impose many requirements on researchers and clinicians regarding different aspects of their work. It can be challenging to keep track of these laws and regulations and to understand their implications. This Pocket Guide is designed to help inform the Yale community about some key laws and regulations and relevant University policies that govern research and clinical activity. It should help you identify areas in your work that are affected by these laws and regulations, and flag some areas in which you should seek help to ensure that you are in compliance with certain laws and University policies. It points you to resources available to assist you in understanding and adhering to the law - it tells you where to go for further information or for training, and what offices at Yale can help you when questions arise. This Pocket Guide offers a starting point for learning more about laws and regulations that apply to you and your work, and can serve as a reference in your lab or office. It is not a definitive statement of the applicable laws, which can be complex, or of University policy. You should seek advice from the responsible department or from the Universitys Office of General Counsel about particular questions. In case of any inconsistency with this Pocket Guide, the official University policy statements and applicable laws and regulations govern. Also, the Pocket Guide is not meant to be comprehensive; it does not discuss data ownership, or research misconduct, for example. Materials related to these and other topics are available through the Yale website. Finally, the laws and regulations that are reviewed in this Guide will be updated and changed from time to time. Please check the websites of the responsible Yale offices from time to time for updates and always call those offices if you have questions. November 9, 2004 |
