Core Laboratory Services

Our mission at the Yale GCRC laboratory is to facilitate NIH funded adult and pediatric research projects. To this end the Core Lab provides an investigator with access to selected analyses and procedures that might otherwise be unavailable or too expensive. Core Laboratories are funded by NIH but designed by individual Centers. The GCRC Core Laboratory can change functions to match current research projects.

Analysis can begin at the patient's bedside. We offer point-of-care glucose (CLIA license), lactate and ethanol measurements. In addition, investigators can take advantage of bedside indirect calorimetry instrumentation. The Center is connected to the YNHH sample transport system which enables routine chemistries to reach Laboratory Medicine quickly.

All of this is supported by our own laboratory facilities to measure a variety of hormones, substrates, and cytokines.

Sample Processing Core

Hours of operation: Monday – Friday (7:30am - 5pm)
In addition, the lab is usually open evenings 2-3 times each week and one weekend each month.

Hormone Core

A large facility capable of analyzing a variety of hormones utilizing RIA, IRMA, and ELISA techniques. Support focuses on assays not readily available in clinical laboratories or large batches of samples too expensive to send to routine hospital facilities.

Substrate Core

An automated laboratory capable of measuring most routine substrates and clinical enzymes utilizing an Alfa-Wasserman ACE analyzer. Also suited to automating the measurement of research compounds using UV/VIS spectrophotometry.

ELISA Core

Our newest core is capable of analyzing most cytokines and tissue markers using a UV/VIS plate reader. The analysis kits for many newly discovered hormones also utilize the ELISA technique making this an important resource to GCRC investigators.

HPLC Core

A small highly specialized area focusing on plasma catecholamine measurements and plasma free amino acid chromatography.

MRI Core

The Magnetic Resonance Research Center (MRRC) in collaboration with the GCRC provides supported access to this MRI resource. All systems have state-of-the-art electronics capable of performing the full range of MRS and MRI sequences including: 13C, 31P, and 1H MRS; spectral eliciting; short echo acquisition; and 3/4D spectroscopic imaging. The GCRC also provides nursing support and sample processing to facilitate patient safety and data collection.

Keck Genomics Core

This is a resource for GCRC investigators which provides even novice investigators with supported access to the Keck Lab at Yale, a state-of-the-art Affymetrix facility. This collaboration provides GCRC investigators with the following benefits:
