General Advisory Committee

The General Advisory Committee (GAC) consists of 15 members, appointed by the Principal Investigator (Robert Alpern, M.D.) on a rotating basis. Voting members are appointed for 3 year terms. Members represent a cross section of faculty familiar with General Clinical Research Center programs, resources, and operations.
Peter Herbert, M.D., currently chairs the General Advisory Committee.

All research protocols must have GAC approval prior to the initiation of studies on the GCRC. The GAC gives priority to NIH-funded clinical research and assures implementation of existing NIH policy on the inclusion of women, minorities, and children as study subjects. The role of the General Advisory Committee is broad and includes: supervision and review of the core laboratories, informatics core, and day to day operations of the GCRC; approval or denial of the protocol application for GCRC resources; assurance that GCRC resources are used for the most scientifically justified and relevant protocols; review of GCRC resources and their consumption; establishment of general policies and guidelines for the GCRC; review of GCRC monthly census and protocol utilization; and the assurance that policies regarding approval of data and safety monitoring plans for Phase I, II, and III clinical trials are appropriate.
