Health Management Program Student Wins 2004 Connecticut Women in Healthcare Management Scholarship

Beth Higa, an M.P.H. ’05 in the Health Management Program, was awarded the 2004 Connecticut Women in Healthcare Management Scholarship by Connecticut Women in Healthcare Management (CWHCM), a professional organization that promotes the career growth of women in the healthcare professions. Each year, the CWHCM scholarship committee selects one recipient for this honor, which recognizes women who demonstrate a commitment to a career in health management. Ms. Higa is the first person from Yale to receive the scholarship. “It’s an honor to receive this award,” she commented, “as CWHCM does so much for women within the health care community.”

Ms. Higa recently finished her first year at the Yale School of Public Health. She
is currently a summer intern for the World Health Organization, and is comparing Chinese and U.S. hospital infection control policies in a post-SARS environment. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in health management, focusing on integrated programming services within and across health sectors.

Prior to coming to Yale, Ms. Higa was an Associate Director at The Advisory Board Company, a health care research firm located in Washington, D.C., where she worked with hospital cardiac and surgical service departments across the country to improve patient throughput and profitability. Ms. Higa received her B.A. from Northwestern University in 1998.

Ms. Higa will receive the scholarship award on September 14th at the annual
CWHCM scholarship meeting held at Saint Clements Castle in Portland, Connecticut.
