| Description |
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, and with latitude for independent judgment, function as Program Coordinator for Yale Emerging Infections Program (EIP) Influenza and Respiratory Disease Surveillance projects. As Program Coordinator, oversee a range of research activities to: 1) identify cases of laboratory confirmed influenza and/or other respiratory diseases of interest through laboratory and/or hospital surveillance, medical record review and/or patient interview 2) conduct related research studies (i.e. cohort or case-control studies, surveys, etc.) based on influenza/respiratory disease surveillance data, and 3) coordinate the collection of appropriate epidemiologic and clinical information on cases of interest and clinical specimens if necessary. May also assist with other EIP surveillance projects.

| Essential Duties |
1. Work with Principal Investigator (PI), Yale EIP staff and New Haven County hospital/laboratory staff to implement EIP influenza/respiratory disease surveillance protocols. This involves identifying and contacting appropriate hospital and laboratory staff, enlisting their support for the surveillance activities, setting up appropriate systems to identify case-patients of interest and identifying sources of data necessary to complete study objectives.
2. Identify and liaison with appropriate staff at CDC, DPH, other EIP sites and participating hospitals in Connecticut to foster a collaborative working relationship and ensure program goals can be met.
3. Conduct active surveillance for cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza admitted to participating New Haven County hospitals by identifying eligible case-patients and independently assessing their eligibility to be counted as cases.
4. Conduct epidemiologic studies (case-control, cohort, survey, etc.) using data collected through routine surveillance. This involves working with CT DPH, other EIP sites and CDC to develop common study protocols, methods, and data collection instruments; implement study protocol(s) at the CT EIP site as necessary.
5. Oversee abstraction of clinical and laboratory information from the medical charts or patient/clinician interview using standardized data collection instruments. Train research staff to: access medical charts, conduct telephone or personal interviews of case-patients, and appropriately use standardized data collection instruments.
6. Develop or create site-specific databases, as necessary, using a variety of software programs (Excel, Access, Epi Info, etc.); maintain all shared, multi-site, databases.
7. Oversee entry of data into appropriate project databases, ensure data integrity and troubleshoot data entry problems.
8. Collect and maintain confidential data files on case-patients in order to fulfill study requirements.
9. Perform data editing and data management to fulfill program requirements.
10. Work with PI and other EIP staff to prepare reports for funding agencies; prepare abstracts and manuscripts for scientific presentation and publication.
11. Supervise C&T level research assistant and MPH level student research assistants hired to work on EIP influenza surveillance projects.
12. In order to ensure consistency of data collection across EIP sites, work with collaborators at CDC and other participating EIP sites to standardize questionnaires, data abstraction forms, protocols and methodologies to be used.
13. Work with PI and student research assistants to draft and maintain all necessary human subjects' approvals and HIPAA approvals related to EIP Influenza/respiratory disease activities.
14. Assist with other EIP projects as needed.

1. Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and writing skills.
2. Intermediate knowledge of computer software packages; experience with email, internet and World Wide Web applications.
3. Basic knowledge of database and statistical analysis software such as SAS, EPI INFO, Excel and/or Access.
4. Good analytical skills and ability to collect data.
5. Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology. |
