The White Coat Ceremony

The White Coat Ceremony recognizes the significance of first year medical students receiving their white jackets, which are worn during all clinical studies. The White Coat Ceremony symbolizes the role of students as care-givers, and it signals the start of medical school. This festive occasion happens on the afternoon of matriculation day, and family members are encouraged to attend. Details are explained in the post-admissions process and during orientation.

Second Year Show

The Second Year Show is a combined artistic effort of the entire second year class. It involves producing; writing, choreographing and performing a two hour live musical comedy, with video segments. The theme usually involves a humorous parody of medical school life, and it often features faculty and staff. Students work on this project for months, while tending to studies and other extracurricular activities, and everyone participates in ways that suit them, including creation, performance or administrative chores. The show is traditionally performed in February.

Commencement

Commencement is the grand finale of a student's Yale School of Medicine experience. It occurs on the third or fourth Monday in May, depending upon the Overall University calendar. The 2002 and 2003 Commencements are scheduled for Memorial Day of their specific year. Commencement festivities begin with a class photo and procession to the University's Cross Campus, where all Yale University students are recognized. Students then process to the School of Medicine campus, for a more intimate ceremony and to receive their diploma. The day ends with a bountiful reception in Harkness. Planning for Commencement begins in late November, and graduating students are asked to participate in award selection and in other ways.
