Students Helping Students (SHS)Mission StatementThe Yale System, while opening opportunities for students, also presents them with challenges. Learning how to study and what material to focus on is a skill in itself, one which every Yale medical student must master. In this area, the knowledge of students that have recently completed the first year curriculum (second year students) can prove invaluable to first year students. Through review, study tips and techniques, and problem sets, second year students can revisit difficult and critical concepts, providing a path to confidence and success. Established in 2001, Students Helping Students is the organization that oversees the effort of second year students who team up to work closely with first year students helping them navigate the science curriculum and manage their time. They run problem-solving sessions using first hand experience and knowledge to focus first year students' studies in a meaningful way and to translate difficult concepts. Most important, they stress group learning as the keystone to success in the Yale System. Sessions are conducted throughout the entire year, focusing on every area of the first year curriculum.
