The applied aspect of my work involves investigating the feasibility,
planning, implementation and management of PACS (Picture Archiving and
Communication Systems). This involves the generation of digital images,
soft-copy interpretation, high speed network communication, and storage in
high-capacity digital archives, culminating in fully filmless radiology. At a
more basic level, I am interested in the application of artificial
intelligence and cognitive science to the practice of radiology and,
eventually, its incorporation into PACS. I am one of the architects (and did
most of the coding) of the Image/Icon and Mammo/Icon expert systems whose goal
is to combine the strengths of human pattern recognition with computer access
of text and image databases, with a view to improve diagnostic accuracy. These
systems use voice recognition to abstract the radiologist's findings from the
dictated report, and provide on-line retrieval of relevant text and images of
previous proven cases. Recently, I have been turning my atttention to studying
the actual cognitive skills picked up by students/residents as they acquire
expertise in radiology. At an even more basic level, I have a strong
theoretical interest in consciousness and evolutionary biology and presented
two posters on the former topic at the Tuscon II Conference "Toward a Science
of Consciousness" in April 1996.
