Education
Fellowships
Cross-Sectional Imaging Fellowships
Two types of Fellowships are offered in Cross-Sectional Imaging:
- Body Imaging (4 fellows/year): Body and Musculoskeletal MRI, Chest/Abd/Pelvis CT, PET/CT, US, including cardiovascular CT/MR.
- MRI (2 fellows/year): includes intensive training in Body MRI, including cardiovascular, and Musculoskeletal MRI.
Clinical MRI
The clinical MRI service currently includes one 3.0T (32 channel) and four 1.5T GE scanners in Yale-New Haven Hospital and one off-site 1.5T GE scanner in a nearby facility. There are separate dedicated 3D workstations for MRA, breast MR/CAD, and cardiac MR. Fellows supervise and/or participate in the performance and interpretation of all body MR exams including cardiac, vascular, chest, breast, abdomen, and pelvis. On the musculoskeletal rotation, fellows participate in performance and interpretation of all musculoskeletal MR examinations, including MR arthrograms.

CT and PET/CT
The CT service presently utilizes one 64 slice, one 16 slice scanners, one 4 slice GE scanners. The 4 slice scanner in the Emergency Department will be replaced with a 64 slice scanner in 2007. There are also 16 slice and 4 slice scanners at nearby outpatient facilities. The CT service performs a large volume of cases in all areas of the body, including CT colonography and coronary CT angiography. A GE PET/CT (16 slice scanner) is located in the nuclear medicine department, and body imaging fellows participate in interpretation (with CT and nuclear medicine attending physicians). Body fellows may also participate in CT-guided biopsies.
US The US service provides comprehensive training in all areas of US including duplex and color Doppler, abdominal, peripheral vascular, breast, small parts, and OB/GYN. Vascular US services are also provided on site in the vascular surgery clinic.
The US rotation includes extensive experience in image-guided biopsy procedures.
ED
A service component, with additional compensation, is required in the Emergency Radiology Department on evenings and weekends for all Body and MR fellows.
PACS
The imaging services are linked to a central image archive with numerous soft-copy image-viewing stations and advanced workstations positioned throughout the department. All cases are read on soft copy using PACS and 3D workstations.
Research
Fellows, with supervision by faculty, are encouraged to participate in clinical or basic research projects. For MR fellows, there is a research requirement.
There is an array of whole body and animal research magnets in a dedicated research MR facility in the Yale University School of Medicine. These include 1.5T and 3.0T Siemens scanners for human and animal research. There are active basic research programs in cardiovascular MRI, MR spectroscopy, imaging processing, and contrast agents.
Conferences
There is a weekly departmental cross-sectional imaging conference, a weekly fellows’ conference (which includes didactic sessions on MR physics), and a weekly Body Club. Every month, there is a Mammography/MR Correlation Conference. Prominent guest speakers present Diagnostic Radiology Grand Rounds every other week from September to May. There are also a variety of interdisciplinary conferences that fellows participate in along with radiology faculty.
