Applying the Principles of Child and Adolescent Development The Academy for Developmentally Centered Education This Academy is designed primarily for teachers, although professionals who work with teachers may also attend. During the five-day experience, participants learn to define teaching and learning from a foundation in child and adolescent development theory. They also learn strategies for integrating these theories into classroom practice, and they share ways in which they have made their classrooms more child-centered. All participants are expected to have a basic understanding of the Comer Process.
The Developmental
Pathways Study Group Each member of the group learns how to observe a child and record their observations based on experiences and conversations with the child, the family and others, visits to the home or neighborhood, school records and samples of student work. As they review and record the data and read their information and conclusions to the group, members gain deeper insights into the circumstances of children's lives, what they actually think and do, how they see things, and how their lives shape their behavior. Members also develop new understandings of themselves, their interactions with children and other adults and how they can apply the lessons learned to improving their devleopmental approach to children and their needs. Participants share these lessons with others in order to help sharpen the developmental perspective of the school. The Comer
