Yale Child Study Center is conducting a research study of Anger Control Training for children and adolescents with TS and disruptive behavior. This is a psychological/educational intervention that consists of ten 50-minute individually administered sessions.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Although TS is defined by the presence of motor and phonic tics, children with TS can also be defiant, argumentative and explosive. Whether these additional behavior problems are part of TS is not clear. When these disruptive behavior problems occur, however, they may present a major challenge for the child's adjustment. The purpose of this project is to evaluate whether a specific anger control program is helpful for children with TS and their families. The program was originally developed for children with excessive anger and aggression and it appears to be helpful. However, it is not yet clear if this program is helpful for children with TS.
CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPATION
To be eligible for the study your child:
Interested families will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to go right into the training course or wait until the course is given again in approximately 3 months. During the 3-month waiting period you and your child can continue to receive regular care either at the Child Study Center or through a clinician in the community. All children and parents who are involved in the study will be asked to fill out rating scales, questionnaires, and answer questions about symptoms and behavior relevant to this project. The anger control training is free and those who attend the sessions will be offered a $20 payment for parking and travel.
