Numbers,
Counting, and Money

Children really enjoy
numbers and counting. Below are a few fun activities to
do with young children wherever you are.
Fun
activities to do with children
- Point out numbers
in everyday life: telephone numbers, license plate numbers
or street sign numbers.
- Ask a child to
count with you: When you climb stairs. How many steps
does it take to get to the car?
- At the grocery
store count with the child as you pick out fruit and vegetables.
Ask the child how many apples did we buy at the store?
Would you like one pear?
- Show and name for
a child: penny, nickel, dime, quarter and dollar.
- Put an assortment
of coins in a pile and ask her to sort them by kind of
coin.
- Let her watch you
make change when at the store and make a point of counting
change together.
- For older children
you can let the child pay for your purchase at the store
and also receive the change. It is a go way to teach children
about counting money.
Public
Libraries offer great books on numbers and counting.
Your FREE library card from your local branch will let you
take books from any library in Connecticut. Many have great
children’s sections with toys, computers, storytimes,
and special events. They lend a variety of FREE and reduced-price
passes to area museums, check your local branch for details.
