Music

Activities to do with Children
Museums
Performances

Provide young children with the opportunity to make music and to listen to music. Teach children simple songs to sing. Expose children to the wide variety of music, different rhythms, tempos and moods. Listen to music of many cultures, Italian opera, folk music, jazz, reggae, rock, country, and children’s music that you like.

As you listen or sing to music, dance with the child. Carry him or hold hands. Encourage young children to move to the rhythm of the music.

Fun activities to do with children

Create your own simple instruments to play with a child:

  • Drums: Beat on the lid of a coffee can or upside down pots and pans.
  • Rhythm Sticks: Tap together two wooden rulers or wooden spoons.
  • Tambourine/Shakers: Fill plastic eggs, film canisters or aluminum pie tins with rice, beans, marbles or another small substance. Glue around together and begin shaking.
  • Bells: Sew jingle bells on a 1” elastic strip and sew ends of strip together to form a wrist or ankle band.
  • Chimes: Fill clear glasses or glass jars with different amount of water. Tap lightly with a spoon to make different notes.
