Fun activities to do with children

Make a fishing rod and go fishing around the house. What will you catch?
Tape about 12” of yarn to the end of a plastic straw. Tie the free end through a hole in a magnet, or glue the end to a Velcro dot that has a hook side. Your ready to fish!! How many items did you catch.

Draw pictures of fish, sharks outside using sidewalk chalk.

Pack a lunch and visit some of the great places to fish


East Rock Park, corner of Orange & Coldspring St's. New Haven (203) 946-6086 Opportunities for fishing, also offering playing fields, playground, a self-guided nature trail, picnic pavilions, an ice-skating rink, ranger station, opportunities for sledding, and kite flying.

Edgewood Park, Edgewood Ave., New Haven (203) 946-8028 Pond for fishing, also there are 120 acres with nature walkways, playground, ranger station with wildlife displays, tennis and basketball courts, playing fields and a skate park. In the summer there is a sculpture fountain where children can run through in their bathing suits.

Lake Wintergreen at West Rock State Park, New Haven/Hamden Fishing, canoeing, and hiking around the lake.

Chapman-Sinoway Park, upper State Street, North Haven. A great place to fish, also there are hiking/walking trails and a picnic area.

Kirk's Pond, located on Route 67 next to the Town Hall, Oxford. Offers fishing and ice-skating.

Legion Pool, Chatfield Rd., Seymour off Route 67. This is a great place to spend the afternoon! The park offers a gazebo, deck overlooking the fish pond, picnic grove, waterfall, and a pond stocked with trout for catch and release ( Fishing for Seymour Land Trust Members Only) and also feeding (the park has a fish food machine and all it takes is a quarter). The park and fishing deck are handicap accessible.

Mill Pond Park, located at the intersection of North River and Cherry Streets, Guilford. The park is used for fishing during the spring, summer and fall seasons.

Mixville Recreation Area, Located on Notch Road near the Cheshire/Prospect town line. This park houses a large picnic area, a beach with swimming and fishing in Mixville Pond.

North Farms Park, Branford Road, (Rte. 139), Branford. Fishing, hiking trails, and ball fields.

Old Tavern Road Park, Old Tavern Road, Orange Fishing pond and ball fields

Osbornedale State Park Hawthorne Avenue, Derby This park features fishing areas, winter ice skating and cross-country skiing, hiking trails and a picnic area.

Sleeping Giant State Park, 200 Mt. Carmel Avenue, Hamden. Fishing and hiking trails.

Young’s Pond, Pine Orchard Road & Blackstone Avenue, Branford. Fishing, hiking trails, playground and ball fields.
